STREET ARTISTS HIJACKING BUS SHELTERS WITH IMPUNITY

VIA: Animal NY
Street artists deploy a variety of methods to get their work seen by the masses. One of these time-honored NYC traditions involves cracking open advertisement kiosks and swapping out the ads with custom art. It’s what put Kaws on the map in the late 1990s and a practice that has been used sporadically since, although lately, it’s happening with increasing frequency. And there’s a very specific reason why. More [HERE]

Poster Boy Upgrades Book Launch, Lawyer

I havent spoken to PosterBoy in a little while but look forward to seeing him at this upcoming event. K.A.R.A.T.E. is a fantastic initiative I hope everyone who reads this site will rally behind.
The underground ad altering artist known as Poster Boy is using his time out of jail for the greater good…of other vandals. He will kick off a legal defense fund for artists” at the launch party for his book: The War of Art. Kids Are Rallying Against The Empire (K.A.R.A.T.E.) aims to assist those in fighting “art-related crimes conceived in public space.” Also, prosecutors beware, PB has a new lawyer: Ron Kuby!

DeSlavio Playground in Little Italy was buffed by the City after being cited as Graffiti

Animal New York reports that the PLAY mural at the DeSlavio Playground in Little Italy was buffed by the City after being cited as Graffiti. The resulting grey wall is an eyesore and the dilapidated mural reminding people what the park was there for is a great loss. Oddly the mural was neither graffiti or art but a company logo for a music centric promotions group PLAY. As much as I hate hearing this, the mural fits all of my standards for appropriate commercial use of public space and was a welcome addition to the small concrete respite. See the Animal article and read the comments for more.

Singing Fish Advertisment

VIA Animal New York

If I had to single out one horrible thing that I never want to see/hear in my life, it would be 25 twitching, singing wall fish burping out “Shake Your Booty” by KC & the Sunshine Band. Well, so much for that.

Frozen seafood company Findus wanted to alert Parisians to the fact that they are committed to responsibly sourced fish. So, their agency, Grey Paris, put up this invasive billboard in Rue de Passy. The fish are activated by a motion detector. And since this is of course a busy pedestrian area of the city, the fish must pretty much be singing that fucking song 24/7. How much fun it must be to live in close proximity to this thing? Now if they sang this ditty instead… |Video: BAOTV|

TankVertising In Bushwick

VIA Animal New York

Ad Creep Update time. New Yorkers are already assaulted daily by ads in motion on buses, both MTA and tourist, taxicab tops, pedicab sides, panel trucks, even the occasional skywriting stunt. Well now, Media-N-Motion (site under construction), apparently a Los Angeles company, wants to stick ads on loud as fuck tanker trucks and send them rolling through New York City neighborhoods—that won’t generate any complaints! Let’s think of some possible fitting advertisers.

The Tank. Beer! (”Get tanked this weekend!”). Actually any alcohol brand. The New York Liquidation Bureau. Uh…

Hasidic and Secular Cyclists Collaborate on Bedford Ave Re-Striping

I know this is old news but I love this sort of direct action community project. Many times people need to step outside of the accepted means of behavior to control the spaces in which they live. A healthy public dialogue is the result and this only contributes to public spaces that reflect the needs of the community.

Via Animal New York

After reports that two people were arrested re-striping bike lanes on Bedford Avenue, comes news that no arrests were in fact made. Only summonses were issued to the group, which included “both secular Williamsburg residents and members of the Hasidic community,” according to local bike shop owner and advocate Baruch Herzfeld. I Can't Even Fathom This

VIA Animal New York

Ad Creep Update is a regular feature on ANIMAL documenting the spreading epidemic of advertising media placement into every nook and cranny of your daily life. Does the thought of staring down a 100 meter ski jump make you want to shit your pants? (Vinko Bogataj would probably evacuate before he got his ski pants down upon entering this stall.) Georgia Max canned coffee, a popular Coca-Cola brand in Japan, transformed bathroom stalls at some local ski resorts like so to promote the beverage. The translated branding on the toilet paper dispenser supposedly reads: "Seriously kick-ass intensely sweet for the real coffee super zinging unstoppable Max! Taste-explosion!" Okey-dokey. Drink Georgia Max, ski faster, gotcha. Also, being that it's a sweetened coffee drink, it probably helps your turd toboggans set indoor speed records, too. Image: coloribus
